The evolution of email use over time

But in the last 20 years, email has become so popular that it has become one of the main means of communication.

  • 1978: The first SPAM is sent
  • 1982 : 1.000 email addresses worldwide
  • 1988 : The first commercial email software is released for the Mac, it is Microsoft Mail
  • 1988 : 500,000 email addresses worldwide
  • 1989 : CompuServe offers access to email at the same time as its Internet connections
  • 1989: IBM releases Lotus Notes 1.0

  • 2005: Creation of SPF, the first technology to verify the identity of an email sender.

  • 2007: The Internet Engineering Task Force adopts the DKIM anti-phishing protocol
  • 2007: 1 billion email addresses worldwide
  • 2009 : Launch of the iPhone which makes access to email even easier
  • 2009: 1.8 billion email addresses worldwide
  • 2011: Associated Press Stylebook recommends the use of the word Email instead of E-mail
  • 2011: 3.1 billion email addresses worldwide
